An Open Letter to the Dorchester County Public Schools Community 6-9-2021

An Open Letter to the Dorchester County Public Schools Community

Good afternoon Dorchester County Public Schools Community,

As we approach the final day of the school year, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to our students, staff, families, and community.  This year has been a balancing act, with everyone at Dorchester County Public Schools working to provide our students with the education they need and deserve while, at the same time, keeping everyone safe through the pandemic.  This has meant a lot of necessary changes and adjustments along the way as we responded to many different evolving situations.  Thank you for your flexibility, your resilience, and your support through the most challenging year I have seen in my 32 years in education.  This school year has been a community effort in so many ways, and I am grateful for our Dorchester County community.

It was a big moment last Friday when the DCPS Covid Dashboard on our website got its weekly update with the information provided by the Dorchester County Health Department and, for the first time in many months, there were NO positive cases last week among either students or staff.  This further supports my vision of next year being a more ‘normal’ school year.  Of course, experience has taught us to expect the unexpected, but at the present time, I am hoping for few out-of-the-ordinary restrictions on school life when the 2021-2022 school year opens in late August.  However, we will continue to follow the rules and guidelines of the CDC and the state of Maryland, as they are at that time.

Our Summer Academies start soon, June 21 for middle and high school and July 12 for elementary.  We already have over 1,200 students registered.  If you think your child could benefit from a little extra classroom time during this summer, contact your school this week.

This summer DCPS is partnering with the Dorchester County Health Department to provide an important step that families can take to help ensure next school year is more ‘normal’.  Two vaccination clinics will be held during June, aimed at DCPS students aged 12 and over and their families.  The first clinic will be at Mace’s Lane Middle School on June 23 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.; the second is at North Dorchester Middle School on June 30 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.  Look for more information soon on our DCPS Facebook page as well as our website.

The Dorchester County Board of Education will be asked to approve a redistricting plan at their monthly meeting on June 17.  This plan will allow us to better balance the numbers in our Cambridge elementary schools and align our elementary and secondary boundaries in the northern part of the county.  For your opportunity to comment, go to our website, dcpsmd.org.  The link to redistricting information is at the top of the homepage.

For those of you starting vacations and seeking that traditional summer of relaxation, have at it.  Please enjoy and stay safe.
