An Open Letter to the Dorchester County Public Schools Community

Good afternoon Dorchester County Public Schools Community,

Today was an exciting day for Dorchester County Public Schools!  We held the first of our high school graduations at Cambridge-School Dorchester High School –it was great to see our seniors and their families sharing this milestone in person.  Tomorrow will be just as exciting as we will celebrate the North Dorchester High School seniors!  Thank you to the staff of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School, North Dorchester High School, and Dorchester Career and Technology Center for making these events special for our students and families.

As you may be aware, during the May Board of Education meeting there was a presentation regarding redistricting.  In our North area, the elementary and secondary boundaries are not identical. This has created concerns as students transition from 5th grade to middle school.  In the Cambridge or South area, we have total population numbers that have one elementary school overpopulated and another underpopulated.  Additionally, the boundaries are not geographically clear and cause confusion and concerns for parents.  DCPS wants to make sure our impacted communities are aware of the solutions presented at the May Board of Education meeting.  We have created a link for comments on the DCPS webpage, http://www.dcps.k12.md.us/, titled Redistricting Plan Public Comment Form. It is in the yellow banner just under the DCPS logo. We are encouraging our community to please review and submit comments. The proposed maps are included.  Additionally, DCPS will be holding four public meetings to discuss these solutions and answer questions.  Please visit our website for the dates and locations.

Finally, we currently have over 1,200 students registered for our Summer Academies.  Please take advantage of these opportunities by reaching out to your child’s school.

I want to thank everyone for continuing to follow our safety protocols.  DCPS will stay the course with in-person learning for all of our schools.  Our virtual learners will continue learning virtually.

Have an enjoyable and safe holiday weekend.
