DCPS Teacher of the Year and First-Class Teacher of the Year Announced

01 April 2021

DCPS Teacher of the Year and First-Class Teacher of the Year Announced

Amy Stoops, a 2nd grade teacher at Hurlock Elementary School, has been named Dorchester County Public Schools Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022.  A six-year veteran of DCPS, Ms. Stoops was one of 11 finalists nominated for the award.

Originally from New Jersey, Ms. Stoops moved to Dorchester County after college graduation in 2015, having been hired as a teacher at Hurlock Elementary. She now resides in East New Market.

“It truly has been my dream to be a teacher since I was a little girl, and I am so lucky to get to say that every day I live my dream!” said Ms. Stoops. “I strive to not only make a difference to the lives of the children in my classroom but to all the children at Hurlock Elementary School by making learning and school fun, engaging and a place where people want to be. Thank you so much to everyone involved in deeming me with this honor and recognition.”

Ms. Stoops will now represent Dorchester County at the annual Maryland Teacher of the Year event held in Baltimore in the fall.

Nathan Turley, the General Music and Band teacher at Choptank Elementary School, was selected as the First-Class Teacher of the Year for Dorchester County Public Schools.  This is a locally sponsored award recognizing a first-year teacher of exceptional promise.  Mr. Turley was one of five finalists.

A recent graduate of Slippery Rock University in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, Mr. Turley completed his student teaching and began his teaching career at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.  He acknowledges this challenge, saying, “Not only did I have to learn how to use new technology and methods, but I had to do so at the same pace as the students (and have) continued to do this throughout the 2020-2021 school year as well.”

Mr. Turley says of his award, "It was such a tremendous honor and a surprise to be named First Class Teacher of the Year. All the teachers being recognized deserved it, based upon the stories I heard about them. It is such a privilege and a blessing to begin my career in Dorchester County at Choptank Elementary School.”

The annual Teacher of the Year and First-Class Teacher of the Year competitions are strongly supported through local business donations and contributions, including the free use of a car for the year from the Hertrich Family of Automobile Dealerships for the Teacher of the Year.
