GEAR-UP Goes on Tour!

Over 30 students in the GEAR-UP program at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School recently completed a four-day tour of five colleges in North Carolina and Atlanta. Stops included North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, and Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Georgia State University, all in Atlanta.

The group, mostly seniors and a few juniors, also took advantage of the opportunity to do some sightseeing. They attended a College Fair at the World Congress Center in Atlanta, toured the CNN headquarters, visited the Dr. Martin Luther King Center and National Center for Civil and Human Rights, and attended a Battle of the Bands at the Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The purpose of the trip was to increase students’ awareness and interest in continuing post-secondary education upon graduating from C-SDHS. Ms. Wanda Ferguson, GEAR-UP coordinator and trip organizer, said, “If one student is successful at achieving their post-academic goal, this trip was worth it.”

GEAR-UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs and is meant to increase the number of low-income, first generation students enrolling and succeeding in college by raising the level of awareness around college admission and the financial aid process.
