21st Century S.T.E.A.M. Virtual Afterschool Program and Tutoring

DCPS Parent/Guardian,

I am excited to inform you of the continuation of the 21st Century S.T.E.A.M. program. Our afterschool program is an opportunity to keep students and families connected with teachers and community members through an online learning experience with a focus in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. Tutoring and homework assistance is incorporated in the afterschool program however; we have a team of amazing Teachers and Instructional Assistants who are willing to provide individual and small group tutoring for eligible students.

This opportunity is offered to DCPS students in grades 3-8, currently enrolled in one of our Title I Elementary or Middle Schools specifically, Maple, Sandy Hill, Hurlock, Choptank, and Maces Lane. The 21st Century S.T.E.A.M. Virtual Afterschool and Tutoring programs are designed to help students adjust and thrive in our “new norm” while enhancing problem-solving and critical thinking skills. The program empowers students to think outside the box, ask questions, and apply information learned in their traditional courses to navigate real-world experiences.

This year, we have the opportunity to partner with the Maryland Science Center, 4 H, NASA, and our very own Dorchester Career and Technology Center.  S.T.E.A.M. is a grant-funded program that requires program accountability by monitoring student progress and development. This information will assist us in meeting our goals to increase student achievement while building confidence, personal enrichment, and self-esteem.

We strongly encourage parent/guardian support by ensuring your child’s regular attendance and active participation. This program can be enjoyed from the comfort and safety of your home as the 21st Century S.T.E.A.M. Virtual Afterschool and Tutoring program will run completely online from January 11th  through May 27th, Monday-Thursday 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm. Tutoring dates and times are contingent on availability and student need. All dates, times, and location (virtual, hybrid, face to face) are subject to change and will follow DCPS safety guidelines. Students will also have the opportunity to receive monthly STEAM kits mailed to your home to continue age-appropriate STEAM activities with your family at home. Please indicate on the online registration form if you would like to receive STEAM kits at no cost to you.

If you are interested in your child participating in the 21st Century S.T.E.A.M. Virtual Afterschool and/or Tutoring program, please complete the online registration. If you have any additional questions, please call (410) 228-4747 Ext. 1038 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. We look forward to another great year of exploring, learning, and growing together!

Kindest Regards,

Jamelle Nance
