About Us:

The Department of Food and Nutrition Services at Dorchester County Public Schools (DCPS) is proud to support the mission in partnership with the community, to provide leadership for excellence in teaching and learning for all students by: consistently advocating for resources, continuously developing sound policies, and carefully monitoring student progress.  Dorchester County Public Schools participate in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) meal program. CEP was created through the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, and allows schools in low-income areas to offer breakfast and lunch at no cost to all students without the burden of collecting household meal applications.

CEP facilitates students access to nutritious school meals increasing student participation and eliminating unpaid meal balances.  By offering all students nutritious meals at no cost, CEP helps schools ensure their students will come to class well-nourished and ready to learn.

Nutritional Requirements of School Meals:

School meals are regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).  Menus are planned to meet and exceed the established nutritional guidelines. The school menus provide

  • 30% or less calories from fat
  • 10% or less of calories from Saturated fats
  • 0 grams of Trans fat
  • Calorie ranges provided by grade levels. 

The Department of Food and Nutrition Services analyzes and evaluates menus to ensure that all USDA guidelines are met.  The Maryland State Department of Education, School and Community Programs Branch conduct annual reviews of menus and school operations.

What is on the Menu:

  • Students must select at least ½ cup of fruit or vegetable at breakfast and lunch.
  • 100% of grains on the menu are whole grain rich.
  • No foods contain trans fat and saturated fat is limited to 10% of calories.
  • Menu items contain less sodium.
  • Offerings of low-fat and nonfat milk.
  • Offerings of daily fresh fruits and vegetables in a rainbow of colors.
